Overview
Those who come to the City of Steel expecting sprawling industry and hordes of soot-encrusted American Joes are bound to be disappointed. The decline of the steel industry has meant cleaner air and rivers, and a recent economical renaissance has produced a brighter urban landscape. City officials are desperate to provide Pittsburgh with a new image, going so far as to propose a theme park filled with robotic dinosaurs. Throughout renewals, Pittsburgh's neighborhoods have maintained strong diverse identities. Admittedly, some of old, sooty Pittsburgh survives in the suburbs, but one need only ride up the Duquesne Incline and view downtown from atop Mt. Washington to see how thoroughly Pittsburgh has entered a new age-and to understand why locals are so proud of "The Burgh."
